How is the test scored

Both methods are employed: Human scoring, as well as Automated scoring. This is done to warrant an accurate and full picture of the test taker's proficiency and skill.

There are advantages in both these methods that are employed. Automated scoring is technologically driven and has its own benefits. Human raters are required to understand the qualitative aspect as well as the ideas projected in the content.

TOEFL iBT® employs automated scoring to harmonize human scoring for specifically two tasks within the Writing section. It is a delicate balance between human assessment for content and connotation ad automated scoring for linguistic features which assure you of the test’s quality and consistency.

Quality in scores

TOEFL iBT® raters go through rigorous training and extensively preparation. They pass stringent certification tests. They are monitored for accuracy and precision and are monitored each time they score a new test.

Rating in a separate unit

To make sure that the verity, quality and security of the test is maintained, the scoring does not take place at the test site. There is a centralized scoring network that carries out and maintains the scoring benchmark to avoid any discrepancy.

The TOEFL iBT® test is scored by a network of test raters who in turn are monitored by a Centralized scoring network.

The test rates are varied and not necessary from the applicant's country of origin to achieve an unbiased rating. The rating is objective and multiple raters judge the Speaking and Writing sections to eliminate any possible chance of bias.
